Mexico Beaches, steamy jungles, teeming cities; chili-spiced cuisine; fiesta fireworks, Frida’s angst: Mexico conjures up different, vivid dreams. Moreover, the actuality lives up to the imagining.
Art & Soul of a Nation
Mexico's Pre-Hispanic civilizations created any of the world’s great archaeological monuments, including Teotihuacán’s towering pyramids and the beautiful Maya temples of Palenque. The Spanish colonial period left beautiful towns full of tree-shaded plazas and richly sculpted stone temples and palaces, while modern Mexico has seen a surge of great art from the likes of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Top museums and galleries document the country's fascinating history and its eternal creative verve. Popular culture is just as vibrant, from the underground party street art of clubs of Mexico City to the exquisite handicrafts of the indigenous people.
Why I Love Mexico
By Mike Gaskin, Writer
I first considered Mexico's pull when reading, as a teenager, the most credible story of Cortés and the Aztecs. My initial visit was six months' backpacking from Ciudad Juárez to Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, and I discovered a kind of spiritual home in the misty, mysterious highlands of Chiapas.
An Outdoor Life
With steaming jungles, snow-capped volcanoes, smoking, cactus-strewn deserts and 10k-km of beach strung with sandy wildlife-rich lagoons and beaches, Mejico is an endless experience for the reasons and a place where life is lived mostly in the clear air. Buy it comfortable dining alfresco beside a Pacific beach or strolling Guanajuato's colonial streets. Alternatively, get out and hike Oaxaca's mountain cloud forests or snorkel warm Caribbean reefs.
The Mexicans
At the center of your Mexican experience will be the Mexican people. A super-diverse crew, from Mexico City hipsters to the shy indigenous villagers of Chiapas, they are famous for their love of color and frequent fiestas, but they are also cool folk, to whom timetables are less powerful than simpatía (empathy). You will rarely find Mexicans less than courteous. They are more often positively charming and know how to please guests. They might despair of ever being well governed, but they are proud of Mexico, their one-of-a-kind country with all its variety, tight-knit family networks, beautiful-ugly cities, deep-rooted traditions, different agave drinks and sensationally chili full meal.
